Rigid Endoscopies For Ear, Nose & Throat
The rigid nasal endoscope is a small instrument, like a silver pencil with a light on the end, 4 millimetres or less in diameter and around 20cm long. With a range of angled lenses to see around corners, and a powerful fibreoptic light source, the surgeon gets detailed close-up views of the internal nose and sinuses. We can also check the back of the nose, and the openings of the Eustachian Tubes which connect with the middle ear. The endoscopic examination looks into all the nooks and crannies of the nose, showing the exact location of any narrowings, bony deformities, polyps and the source of any pus drainage. This helps us make a plan for treatment.

Tonsils and Tonsillitis

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

In addition to the traditional techniques of vertical partial laryngectomy (hemilaryngectomy) and supraglottic laryngectomy, new techniques are now in practice that extend the indications to a far greater number of patients.

There are several congenital conditions which occur in pediatric patients. These include mid-line masses called thyroglossal duct cysts and more lateral masses called branchial cleft cysts.
These condition require surgical removal as they can become infected and, although rare, they can undergo malignant degeneration.
Enlarged lymph nodes can be inflammatory and can also be indicative of cancerous growths and should be evaluated. These can turn into abscesses and require antibiotics and drainage of the infection.

Many cancers of the head and neck can be cured, especially if they are found early. Although eliminating the cancer is the primary goal of treatment, preserving the function of the nearby nerves, organs, and tissues is also very important. When planning treatment, doctors consider how treatment might affect a person’s quality of life, such as how a person feels, looks, talks, eats, and breathes.

Removal Of Foreign Body Ear, Nose & Throat.
Foreign bodies in the ear, nose, and throat are occasionally seen in family medicine, usually in children. The most common foreign bodies are food, plastic toys, and small household items. Diagnosis is often delayed because the causative event is usually unobserved, the symptoms are nonspecific, and patients often are misdiagnosed initially. Most ear and nose foreign bodies can be removed by a skilled physician in the office with minimal risk of complications.
Common removal methods include use of forceps, water irrigation, and suction catheter. Pharyngeal or tracheal foreign bodies are medical emergencies requiring surgical consultation. Radiography results are often normal. Flexible or rigid endoscopy usually is required to confirm the diagnosis and to remove the foreign body. Physicians need to have a high index of suspicion for foreign bodies in children with unexplained upper airway symptoms. It is important to understand the anatomy and the indications for subspecialist referral. The evidence is inadequate to make strong recommendations for specific removal techniques.

HOW IS THYROPLASTY DONE?
Thyroplasty is performed through a neck incision. This small (1 inch) incision is used to approach the larynx (voice box). A small hole of cartilage is removed from the outer larynx to allow the implant to be placed. The implant is then placed to the side of the vocal cord while the vocal cords are visualized from inside, to ensure that the vocal cord is in a good final position. When the position is confirmed, the hole in the cartilage is closed and the incision is closed. The patient will often have hoarse voice for a week as the swelling subsides.
